Research plays a critical role in the understanding and conservation of historic designed landscapes – knowing a site’s past can help us decide why and how we need to care for it in the future. It is important too that we record what currently survives of a site so that we can know what has been lost, and what we need to save for the future.

Only by understanding historic parks and gardens can we know why and how to look after them.
Research and recording work is vital to achieving our conservation goals and so the Gardens Trust works hard to lead and support in this field.
