Nominated for: Making a difference to the day-to-day running of a CGT
Jeryl Andrew has been a Trustee of the Devon Gardens Trust (DGT) since October 2020, at a time when a number of Trustees and Officers had retired and recruitment was such a problem that the past Chair had had to take on many of their roles. To help tackle this, Jeryl created the role of Head of Governance.
As Head of Governance, Jeryl initiated a revision to the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the Devon Gardens Trust to bring DGT into line with modern charity law, with particular reference to digital capacity, guiding DGT through its requirements. With DGT’s Treasurer she also started a ‘New Initiatives Group’ to increase DGT’s grant-giving programmes, following legal advice on what (and to whom) DGT can give its charitable funds. Jeryl has also drafted amendments to policies, maintains the required Register of Interests, assists the Chair in compiling the Annual Report to ensure the smooth programming of the AGM and made recommendations about the management of Trustee succession and required skills, so as to ensure smooth transition following Trustee retirement.

All of this work has been done tactfully and assiduously but as it is all behind the scenes, not many outside the Board of Trustees appreciate or know what has been achieved. Many do not recognize the work done by Trustees as deserving of recognition, unlike other more obvious volunteering roles, but without it the charity could not function. It also involves considerable responsibility!”
